AIRCON TECHNICIAN

9:00-19:00 (10 hours) 

“I have been maintaining and repairing aircons for over 20 years. I’ve done many different things over the course of my career - worked in an internet cafe, insurance, and even as airport security staff. In 2003, SARS hit so I was forced to switch careers - what a blessing that turned out to be. I learnt the trade over the years whilst studying for different certifications. You need to be very patient and familiar with the workings of all the different models. It’s a great profession for a city like Hong Kong - you never run out of work!” 

「我做咗冷氣維修超過20年。我做過好多唔同嘅工作，喺網吧做過、賣保險、甚至做過機場保安人員。2003年沙士嗰陣經濟唔好，我焗住要轉行，後來諗返都算好好彩。我嗰陣一路考唔同嘅證書課程一邊學呢門手藝。你要好有耐性同埋好熟識唔同嘅冷氣機型號係點運作。呢份工喺香港咁嘅城市好好做，唔怕冇工開吖嘛！」 

“I’m not afraid of heights at all. I don’t think you can do this work otherwise. Sometimes you do end up in some pretty strange positions though, depending on how the aircon was installed. The highest that I’ve ever been to fix an aircon unit is over 60 stories. I was hanging outside the window - with my safety harness, of course - and it was a pretty windy day! People think that they don’t need to look after their aircons, and then they wonder why they end up with all sorts of issues. I really enjoy this line of work as you get to go everywhere across Hong Kong and discover new places! It’s not as boring as an office job.”

“I have two kids and even though I’m generally a pretty easy going guy, I am a strict dad at home. Every night after work, I will sit down with them and help them with their homework - it is incredible how much homework kids get these days! We are moving as a family to the UK soon, as I want the kids to experience being educated abroad. It will be a total reset - we don’t know anyone there, and have never visited the city that we are moving to. I will also need to find work once we’ve settled in - they don’t use aircons nearly as much over there! I will miss the daily comforts, food and convenience of Hong Kong, but I am also hopeful for a fresh start.”
