“I collect and sort all the used styrofoam boxes and stack them up neatly so that they are ready for the recycling trucks. I’m always stationed here right next to the wet market, and I get all these used boxes from the market vendors. Every day, I walk for 40 minutes to get to work. Even though I’ve only done this job for about two years, I’ve already made some good friends at the market; it’s a lovely atmosphere here and it’s always nice to have others to chit chat with while working. My first job as a teenager was very different. I was a tailor for many years and really enjoyed making beautiful clothing. I would of course also make dresses for myself and for my family. As the years went by, fashion stores popped up everywhere in the city and that meant less and less business for me. Now I work 7 days a week but I don’t mind - at least styrofoam is light and easy to handle!”

“I have four kids, and two of them are architects. I’m not sure what they think of my work but I would much rather come out and have a daily routine. Isn’t it much better than sitting at home, eating and sleeping all day? I am 76 years old but I want to keep working and I don’t want to be a burden. Sometimes the market vendors finish late, so I also stay a bit later to finish my work. I don’t mind at all as I feel like I am just spending a bit more time with my friends. After work, I take my 40 minute stroll back home. Sometimes I will also go to YumCha and browse in the shops with my daughter. My day to day life is simple and I also like to eat simply; noodles or congee is good enough for me.”

“I got divorced when I was 40 years old, and raised all four of my kids on my own. Back then, I had to hold down several jobs at the same time in order to make enough money to feed my kids. I also worked as a domestic worker for many years. Those days were definitely challenging; I don’t even know where to begin to articulate how I felt. It’s all in the past now and it’s always important to look ahead. It may seem odd in some people’s eyes, but this job gives me something to look forward to every day and brings me happiness. As long as you don’t harm anybody, everyone should be able to do whatever they want in order to be happy!”
