“I am 107 years old and I’m the oldest resident at the Lok Fu Helping Hand Care Home. I came to Hong Kong from Dongguan in the 1940s, after the war. My family were farmers and during the war, life was very tough. There was very little to eat. I am illiterate as I never really had the chance to go to school. I met my husband through a matchmaker - that’s how we did it back in those days. He found a job in Hong Kong so I followed him. I like it much better here in Hong Kong. My dear husband died over 30 years ago, but I am well surrounded by my daughters, grandchildren and great grandson! They come to visit me every week. "

「我今年107歲，係伸手助人協會樂富護老院最老嘅院友。我喺40年代嗰陣由東莞嚟香港，嗰時啱啱打完仗。我屋企係耕田嘅，打仗嗰陣，日子好艱難。嗰陣時冇飽飯食。我唔識字，因為我冇機會真係去讀書返學。我先生係媒人介紹嘅，嗰陣時我哋係咁樣識人。佢喺香港搵到份工，所以我就跟咗佢過嚟。我鍾意喺香港住多啲啊。我先生30幾年前過咗身，但係仲有啲囡、孫同埋曾孫陪住我！佢哋每個禮拜都嚟探我。」

“When we first moved to Hong Kong, my husband got a little sampan. I would make congee and dessert, which he would sell on the waters to the fishermen. I would also be busy looking after my two daughters. Years later, I started to work at a noodle shop and helped to package dry noodles for sale. My eldest daughter started working when she was just 12 years old - first making watch straps and then later at a garment factory. But even my daughter is now 78 years old!"

”I have always enjoyed chit chatting with people in my community, and I don’t hold grudges. My life has been pretty stable, no big ups and downs. I guess I can be a bit impatient sometimes; I like to get things done quickly and I don’t really like to wait for people! For a few decades, I would go for my morning hikes every day at 5am. It was my daily routine and kept me fit. I like it here at the care home and I’m pretty comfortable. I’ve been with the Helping Hand care homes for over 33 years. They look after us really well, and I enjoy all the activities and playing games with my peers. A few years ago, when I was 100 years old, I was the Boccia champion at the care home!”

「我哋一開始搬嚟香港嗰陣，我先生搵咗隻艇仔返嚟。咁我就會整啲艇仔粥同埋糖水，等佢攞上艇度賣俾啲漁民。嗰時仲要忙住湊兩個囡。好多年之後，我開始喺一間麵舖度做嘢，幫手包裝啲麵餅攞去賣。我大囡12歲嗰陣就要出嚟做嘢，一開始係整錶帶，之後就喺製衣廠度做。不過我個囡今年都78歲囉！」

「我好鍾意同人傾偈，我唔記仇㗎。我嘅人生都算好平穩，冇咩大起大跌。我諗我有時都會有啲唔耐煩，我鍾意啲嘢快快手做完，唔係咁鍾意等人！有好幾十年，我每日清晨五點去晨運。變咗生活習慣，令到我身體健康啲。我鍾意呢間護老院，我都住得幾舒服。我住咗喺伸手助人協會嘅護老院超過33年啦。佢哋照顧得我哋好好，我鍾意參加佢哋安排嘅活動同埋同啲老友記玩遊戲。幾年前我100歲大壽嗰陣，我贏咗護老院硬地滾球比賽嘅冠軍！」
